Delivering reliable biological treatment for high-BOD, high-TSS food processing wastewater, engineered, permitted, and constructed within a constrained footprint constrained facility within 12 months.

Executive Summary

Monterey Gourmet Foods, a Pulmuone Foods USA brand, expanded its Gilroy, California facility to support on-site production of fresh noodles with a capacity of up to 24 million packs per year. The expansion triggered stringent municipal wastewater discharge requirements imposed by the City of Gilroy, limiting Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Total Suspended Solids (TSS) to 1,000 mg/L each. The facility’s projected wastewater strength up to 6,000 mg/L BOD and 2,000 mg/L TSS at approximately 80,000 gallons per day required advanced treatment within a highly constrained site footprint and an accelerated project schedule.

Tomorrow Water Actions and Scope

Tomorrow Water engineered and delivered a compact, high-performance wastewater treatment solution constructed within the existing parking area of the operating food processing facility. The scope included permitting support, process engineering, equipment supply, and construction. To meet space and schedule constraints, Tomorrow Water maximized off-site fabrication and assembly, including a containerized electrical and control room to accelerate deployment.

The treatment system integrates mechanical screening, Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) technology for robust biological treatment, and Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) for effective solids separation. The modular MBBR-DAF configuration provides high organic removal efficiency within a reduced footprint, stable performance under variable loading conditions, and low operational maintenance requirements.

Conclusion

Through a technically efficient and space-optimized design, Tomorrow Water enabled Monterey Gourmet Foods to achieve full compliance with strict municipal discharge limits while supporting expanded food production operations. The delivered MBBR-DAF system provides reliable, scalable treatment performance, minimizes operational risk, and reinforces the client’s commitment to environmental stewardship, demonstrating how advanced wastewater engineering can be successfully deployed in space- and time-constrained industrial environments.
